Ibn Battuta, one of the most famous travelers in history, set out in 1325 from his native Tangier, in Morocco, on an epic journey to Mecca (Makkah), the historical and cultural center of Islam, to perform the Hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.
By the time he returned home 29 years later, Ibn Battuta had crisscrossed the world, visiting Africa, Spain, India and China, and travelled some 75,000 miles and three times further than Marco Polo. http://www.journeytomecca.co.uk/about-ibn-battuta/introduction
